Our Doors are Open

We are an active enthusiastic bunch of over 300 people who welcome visitors to the bee museum and teaching facility. Usually our monthly night meetings are about something theoretical or fun, for example genetics, making mead or beeswax products.

We have lots of regular visitors including school kids, the disabled, teenagers, scouts, Probus and other community groups. We demonstrate and educate about pollination, honey and the difficulties faced by bees and their keepers worldwide.

We’ve had visitors from Spain, Turkey, South America, Korea, China, teach beekeeping skills on our one day hands on courses and we have fun doing it!

APIARY VISITS

Are you part of a community group that needs a beekeeper to speak or give a live demonstration on apiculture? The Illawarra Beekeepers have a permanent apiary and beekeepers museum located in Sutherland open to visits from our community and abroad. Over the past many years, we have hosted visits from many local and international groups. If you are part of a group that would like to visit our apiary and museum, you can contact us (subject to Covid-19 guidelines) with details on your requirements.

Make a Difference

Bees are under threat worldwide and Australia as an island is currently protected from many of the issues affecting bees world wide.

Bees pollinate plants and without plants we wouldn’t have food. The whole of life on earth relies on bees. By becoming a bee keeper you are helping the local population of bees to be mainitained in a managed way that will help ensure the bees survive should some of these global issues arrive on our shores.

Keeping Bees is a truly fascinating hobby for all ages that can easily be practiced no matter how small your house block is, we have members with bees in sydney city terrace blocks only 3.5 meters wide. If you have a vegetable garden it will greatly benefit from the extra pollination from your own hive and you also get the benefit of making your own raw honey…its yum fresh produce.
