Happy New Year! 2020 The Year Ahead
Welcome back and Happy New Year. It has been an eventful start to the year, so sad that our wonderful bees and pollinators have been under such a great threat. I hope that anyone that suffered losses to their apiaries have been able to attain help and support from the revenant departments.
We have lots planned for this year already, please keep checking on the website calendar for coming events, as some dates may have to change as we try and fit in our guest speakers’ availability.
The AGM for Illawarra Beekeepers Association will take place on the 12th March at the Night Meeting we will be starting promptly at 7pm, if you have anyone you would like to nominate for a position on the committee please email Penny on email@example.com
Night Meeting 13th February 2020
Small Hive Beetle SHB
This tiny beetle is causing havoc in hives around the Sydney basin at the moment, with the sudden rise in humidity and an increase in activity SHB has the power to decimate a hive in a few short weeks. Neal presented an outstanding talk on Hive Bases last year and has agreed to convey his thoughts on Beetle Traps and how to deal with these little devils. Please have your Questions ready to fire at him.
Tia Hoare – Australian Scout Medallion
Tia is a member of 1st Grays Pt, Scout Group. She has been working towards attaining her Australian Scout Medallion and will be presenting her project on making Bee Hotels and why she chose bees as her topic. I first spoke to Tia last year at the club Open Day, where she expressed an interest in learning more about bees. The Scout Group has visited our club to learn about beekeeping. They also made Natural Beeswax Wraps to take home. Tia would like to donate the Bee Hotels to the club to go into the apiary.
Yes it’s that time again where I ask for helpers, we have a number of events happening soon and it would be great to have some extra heplers and a couple of chairpersons to coordinate the events.
Ivan has also requested help with running the club shop which is open on the field days and night meetings, please drop in and speak to Ivan if you think you may be able to assist.
AFB Honey Testing
I would like to speak to anyone interested in submitting honey for testing before the night meeting as I need samples on the night. A honey sample from the club hives along with two other members honey will be tested for AFB. The testing will be conducted in complete confidence with the results being sent only to Bruce White and the individuals partaking in the testing. Please email Penny here.
